Midterm Ideas
For my midterm essay idea, The question I want to bring attention to is How does gender inequality influence perspective in science conducted in today’s society? Perspective is a very powerful thing that many people take for granted. By understanding the feminist standpoint theory and how as a society we can benefit from it, people can change for the better with a better perspective. I can also discuss how to draw a scientist article that can show that gender inequality is instilled into the youth at a very young age. I’ve done research on this very topic before in a previous year and have a plan on changing the future of gender inequality. Finally, bringing in Oresks views on objectivity and heroism really drives it home about the implications of gender inequality in science.
My second idea would be What are the ethical implications of science driven by political gain ? By incorporating politics it will change the intentions of the science being conducted and will almost always be fought against. I would first start off with the Cole Uncle of The Atomic Bomb to show how politics played a role in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of lives taken. I would follow up with Okuns white supremacy culture and how President Truman’s decisions and actions coincide with white supremacy culture. Using violence as a form of political gain is a form of terrorism. The President of The United States gave the green light on the death of hundreds of thousands of lives to end a war that was considered to be already won.
My last idea would talk about how art can be incorporated in learning science. With the use of diagrams, pictures, drawing, or even collages, science can be learned and retained easier. In Marie Curie’s book, the author Lauren Rediss, chose to use tons of pictures as well as colors on each page to illustrate emotion and allow the reader to relate to the text. This gives a different meaning to learning science, rather than just reading from a plain text book. I don’t know about you, but reading about scientists is typically boring and bland. It usually talks about the work they have conducted and their successes. In Marie Curie, it talks about her personal experiences, as well as her hardships that challenged her. This class itself provides an artistic feel with the activities we do every week to help get a different grasp at the information.
